Sophia’s book Wielders Book One: The Journey Begins was the 7th best seller at the 2016 Kentucky Book Fair. Sophia was on the top ten best sellers list in 2015 also. This is an amazing achievement for such a young author. This is the fourth year Sophia has attended the Kentucky Book Fair and she has ten published books.
“Kid’s eyes light up when I tell them that I am an author. They see that they can write books like me. I love to hear about the stories my fans are writing. I always encourage them to keep at it and to follow their dreams.” Sophia says.
“Writing is not as hard as it looks so don’t give up and keep writing. If I can do it, you can to.” Sophia tells young fans.
Sophia and her father are available to visit schools to tell their story of writing together to inspire and teach students across the state. Sophia and Lucas McWilliams have already shared their love for writing with several hundred Garrard County students. Sophia and Lucas encourage students to write and follow their dreams. They have already produced and edited four books written by Garrard County Students and will continue to work with Garrard Schools as well as schools from other districts. It is their hope that by publishing students’ work they can give students who dream of becoming an author an opportunity they would not normally have. Proceeds are donated back to the schools to help further writing programs. “For me, it is all about the students. They all have stories to tell. I just help them get their words on paper.” Lucas McWilliams says.
Lucas and Sophia McWilliams have received a lot of attention for their published books. Sophia has achieved great success in her life as one of the youngest and most creative writers to have successfully published a book. Their first book series, Wielders, has benefited from great reviews and testimonials. With nine books already published, and several more to come, the McWilliams are becoming more well known in the publishing world. After writing for four years now, the father/daughter duo have published nine children’s chapter books, named Wielders, about five friends who are sent to another world full of fun and adventure.
Their books incorporate a sense of creativity and fun into the context of the book – which is something not many writers are capable of successfully achieving. Wielders focuses on five friends, and their journey through the new world. With magical creatures inhabiting the world, known as Phasers, the friends stick together through everything that happens. With adventures happening daily, the five friends are always on a mission to solve something, go somewhere or simply explore their new surroundings.
Sophia McWilliams has earned three Regional Scholastic Writing Gold Key awards as well as several Silver Key and many Honorable Mentions for her writing.
“The Wielders’s book 1 is so imaginative. As Sophia’s 5th grade teacher, I was able to see the games on the playground that turned into these wonderful books. From a teaching perspective this is a wonderful book to use to teach the fantasy genre to young readers. However, my favorite aspect about these books is that they are written by a child (and her father) for children! Students are eager to read these with the attraction of wonderful artwork and exciting adventures.” Jeremy Thompson, 5th grade reading teacher.
“I love this book! The characters are just like kids I know. I love how they tease each other. But when things get rough they always pull together like true friends.” A kid’s review.
