PBIS and School-wide Expectations

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR AND SUPPORT

Garrard Middle School staff approach student behavior in a positive and supportive manner which will encourage students to make responsible decisions and choices.  There are systematic rewards scheduled after each midterm and each 9 weeks progress report to  support and encourage students for making A’s, B’s, or C’s on their grade reports and for having good behavior  by not receiving an office discipline referral during each 4 ½ weeks  period.

Although, we teach and expect students to display proper behaviors during the school day, there are situations where students chose to not follow school expectations.  We do have consequences in place for inappropriate behaviors which will be consistently enforced.  Consequences will begin on a teacher and even a team level, but can progress to the office level for repeated violations.  As students are referred to the office for disciplinary reasons, their consequences will increase for each offense throughout the school year.  There will be interventions included for assisting students to make better choices.  The goals of the interventions are to help students recognize the impact of their behavior on success in learning and to provide a positive behavioral support system for them.

Classroom Discipline (Teacher Imposed)

Students are taught behavior expectations and procedures for arrival/dismissal to school and for all areas of the school.  This teaching occurs during the first three days of school and reteaching takes place after extended breaks from school.  The GMS Student Council has created videos that help show a visual of these expectations:
