GCHS Principal Selection - Stakeholder Input

Garrard County High School Stakeholders

As you may know, Mrs. Diana Hart has accepted the position of Director of Pupil Personnel (DPP), leaving a vacancy for the principal position at Garrard County High School.

The Site-Based Decision Making (SBDM) Council, chaired by the superintendent, received the mandatory Principal Selection Training on Monday, July 9, 2018 as a part of a specially-called meeting.   Last year, there was an extensive process used to determine the selection criteria which included the opportunity for stakeholders to respond to an online survey and attend forums at the school.  With that in mind, we decided to use the same selection criteria that were used one year ago: School Climate, Expectations, Curriculum and Leadership.  However, we do want to give you the opportunity to give us suggestions if you wish.  You may do that by following this link:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdlTXkhOW6vKwxbIz88K6wTUuboeKmXycs8QBNnz_Iy3xRwfQ/viewform?usp=sf_link

As we move forward with the process, here is the tentative timeline with tentative topics:

Monday, July 16, 2018, 5:00 PM – Special Meeting to: Review any additional stakeholder input, finalize processes and questions, review applications and reference checks, select interviewees, schedule interviews

Thursday, July 19, 2018, 9:00 AM – Special Meeting to: Conduct interviews, consider merits of candidates, select a principal

We are working hard to be diligent in our search for, and selection of, the next principal of Garrard County High School.

GCHS Art II Class * Service Learning * CDR Outdoor Classroom

Art Classes at GCHS volunteered to design and decorate wire spools to upcycle as outdoor classroom tables for CDR's new playground space. Senior art students chose the final designs and led the design and execution of the tables. Some of the tables are interactive with checkers and tic-tac-toe game boards or fairy gardens and roads for imaginary play. The high schoolers had a lot of fun creating the tables and reminiscing about their elementary school days. Tree stumps will be added for seating around the tables. (Gear-Up sponsored supplies for this Senior led project.)

2018-2019 calendar survey

The School Calendar Committee will prepare and recommend a school calendar for the upcoming school year to the Board of Education for adoption [required by KDE on or before May 15 of each year]. The committee shall consist of one district principal; one district office administrator other than the superintendent; one local Board member; two parents of students; one district elementary teacher; one district middle or high teacher; two district classified employees; and two community members. The committee will review calendar drafts, consider suggestions received on the survey, and make an effort to implement recommendations from school principals in developing a school calendar that reflects what is in the best interest of students. The committee will determine what is most appropriate in placing the four [4] professional development days, opening day, closing day, make-up days, four [4] holidays, and other days the district must be closed such as election days. The Board of Education has the final decision-making power in establishing the school calendar.

If you would like to make suggestions for the calendar committee to consider, please complete the following survey.

The committee members are to consider all input in developing the school calendar.

Garrard County Schools will be closed on Friday, April 13, 2018

Garrard County Schools will be closed on Friday, April 13, 2018 as many of our staff members will travel to Frankfort to advocate for our children and for public education.  The House and Senate will be in session and are expected to consider whether or not to override vetoes issued by Governor Bevin.  There are three key bills that are critical to public education.

Two of those are the budget and revenue bills for the upcoming biennium (HB 200 and HB 366).  These bills allocate the state’s resources and set revenue structures to fund them.  The Governor’s initial budget proposal included drastic cuts to education.  Specifically, for Garrard County Schools, the cuts and increased costs would amount to an $850,000 loss.  The Senate’s proposed budget was slightly better and the House version was by far the friendliest to public education.  The budget compromise reached by the House and Senate could still be a small net loss for Garrard County Schools but is far better than the Governor’s proposal.  The Governor vetoed the compromise reached by the House and Senate.  We will urge the House and Senate to override that veto and the veto of the accompanying revenue bill.  If no budget is passed, it is uncertain what would occur during a potential special session.
