Logan Speake, Kash White, and Lane Hembree don't mind the extra responsibility to do something they enjoy. The fifth graders at Paint Lick Elementary School say it is an honor to raise and lower the flags which includes the American flag, the Kentucky flag and the National Blue Ribbon flag each school day.
The boys were taught by last year's flag team how to hook the flags to the pole as well as proper flag etiquette. Students selected are dependable and trustworthy. They make a point for the American flag to never touch the ground.
The students listen to the daily news to decide whether the American flag needs to be lowered to half staff as a symbol of respect or mourning. Weather is another factor they consider before raising the flags.
