Garrard County Board of Education Approves 2019-2020 School Calendar

Diana Hart Selected to Participate in Prestigious Leadership Program Hart Family

Frankfort KY – After a competitive application process, 24 female educators have been selected for the 2019 cohort of the Kentucky Women in Education Leadership (KWEL). Applicants were chosen based on specific leadership criteria. These leaders, along with some of the state’s top female executive educators, will convene January 17-18, 2019 in Louisville for a leadership forum and induction ceremony.

GEAR UP Grant Will Benefit Garrard County Schools GMS Students

Garrard County Schools will benefit greatly from a grant received by Partners for Education at Berea College. Specifically, through involvement with the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) Opportunity Grant, Garrard County Schools will be able to employ two Academic Interventionists and two College and Career Navigators.  Additionally, funds will be available for college visits and a host of other activities that will be designed to break down barriers to college success.  Altogether, it will mean nearly $2,000,000 in funds coming into Garrard County Schools over a seven-year period.

Superintendent Corey Keith is incredibly excited by this opportunity.  He says, “Partners for Education at Berea College has been a wonderful supporter of Garrard County Schools.  With the funds and resources provided by this new grant, we will be able to offer students additional services.  The utilization of academic interventionists will be another safety net for our struggling students.  Also, the college and career navigators will benefit our students in a number of ways.  Notably, students will have a heightened awareness of opportunities and of what is necessary to be accepted to college and successfully earn a degree.  We are so grateful to have Garrard County Schools included in this wonderful program.”

Garrard 2019-2020 Calendar Survey

The school calendar impacts students, families, and staff so it is important that we gain your input. Work is about to begin on the 2019-2020 school year and we would like some data to help us make the best decisions for our district as a whole. We know it's not possible to accommodate everyone's preferences, but your input will be taken into consideration and provide a solid starting point to begin developing the calendar.

GCHS Principal Selection - Stakeholder Input

Garrard County High School Stakeholders

As you may know, Mrs. Diana Hart has accepted the position of Director of Pupil Personnel (DPP), leaving a vacancy for the principal position at Garrard County High School.

The Site-Based Decision Making (SBDM) Council, chaired by the superintendent, received the mandatory Principal Selection Training on Monday, July 9, 2018 as a part of a specially-called meeting.   Last year, there was an extensive process used to determine the selection criteria which included the opportunity for stakeholders to respond to an online survey and attend forums at the school.  With that in mind, we decided to use the same selection criteria that were used one year ago: School Climate, Expectations, Curriculum and Leadership.  However, we do want to give you the opportunity to give us suggestions if you wish.  You may do that by following this link:

As we move forward with the process, here is the tentative timeline with tentative topics:

Monday, July 16, 2018, 5:00 PM – Special Meeting to: Review any additional stakeholder input, finalize processes and questions, review applications and reference checks, select interviewees, schedule interviews

Thursday, July 19, 2018, 9:00 AM – Special Meeting to: Conduct interviews, consider merits of candidates, select a principal

We are working hard to be diligent in our search for, and selection of, the next principal of Garrard County High School.

Brent Moore * Skills USA * Welding

Congrats to Brent Moore who was awarded 3rd place at state Skills USA welding competition.  He will receive a $5000.00 scholarship to Kentucky Welding Institute.

Garrard County Schools will be closed on Friday, April 13, 2018

Garrard County Schools will be closed on Friday, April 13, 2018 as many of our staff members will travel to Frankfort to advocate for our children and for public education.  The House and Senate will be in session and are expected to consider whether or not to override vetoes issued by Governor Bevin.  There are three key bills that are critical to public education.

Two of those are the budget and revenue bills for the upcoming biennium (HB 200 and HB 366).  These bills allocate the state’s resources and set revenue structures to fund them.  The Governor’s initial budget proposal included drastic cuts to education.  Specifically, for Garrard County Schools, the cuts and increased costs would amount to an $850,000 loss.  The Senate’s proposed budget was slightly better and the House version was by far the friendliest to public education.  The budget compromise reached by the House and Senate could still be a small net loss for Garrard County Schools but is far better than the Governor’s proposal.  The Governor vetoed the compromise reached by the House and Senate.  We will urge the House and Senate to override that veto and the veto of the accompanying revenue bill.  If no budget is passed, it is uncertain what would occur during a potential special session.

School Superintendent Selection Process

The process for electing a superintendent Screening Committee is underway.  By statute,   a committee is to be formed within 30 days of a superintendent vacancy occurring.   This Selection Committee will consist of one board member, one principal, one parent, one classified staff member, and two teachers.  The board member representative is appointed by the Board Chairman.  The principal representative is selected by the principals. The parent representative is selected from parent nominations by the active PTO Presidents.  The classified staff representative is voted upon by paper ballot from nominations.  The two teacher representatives are also voted upon by paper ballot from nominations.

Nominations will be received until 5 pm on Friday, July 8th, 2016.   Voting for the Selection Committee members will take place Wednesday, July 13th at the Board of Education from 10 am to 4 pm.  This will be a paper ballot that does require a sign-in.

Classified staff members may stop in on this day to cast their vote for the classified staff representative.  Teachers (Certified Staff) may stop by to cast their vote for the two teacher representatives.

Parents and district staff have all been notified by phone that nominations for the representatives will close at 5 pm on Friday, July 8th.  Any parent or district staff member can nominate or self-nominate.  You may nominate yourself or someone else by contacting Mindy Morrow at the Board of Education (Phone:  792-3018).

Ky. Tech-Garrard Co. ATC Carpentry Program

Playhouse - For Sale

The students in the Carpentry Program at Ky. Tech-Garrard Co. ATC have constructed a playhouse suitable for all ages to enjoy anytime of the year.  The playhouse is furnished with working electricity, two dormer sky lights as well as furniture that was hand made by our students including a picnic table, two youth sized chairs and a two person bench.  It is also weatherproof with a commercial grade shingle roof, a stained deck and the outside is painted hunter green with white “soup can” trim for the kid in all of us.  The interior walls are finished with knotty pine and carpet on the floor. This isn’t your average “cookie cutter” playhouse it has a character that you can’t find anywhere else.  This is the latest project our students are working on to help raise money for their program due to budget cuts.  Proceeds from this project will go directly in the Carpentry program for similar projects in the future.  The playhouse will fit on a standard 12 x 8 trailer, and we will help you load. The price for this completely handmade playhouse is $3500.  The first person to bring a check to the Garrard ATC will be the proud new owner. Sorry no holds.  For more information please contact Mike Oakley at 792-2144 between 7:30a and 3:30p.

Non Traditional School Instructional Days Survey

Many school systems in the state of Kentucky have implemented a plan to use non-traditional instructional days when the weather prevents regular attendance across the district.  School systems are allowed to decide which days would be made up in a non-traditional way and which days would be made up traditionally, by adding days to the calendar or rearranging the calendar.  Non-traditional plans include opportunities for learning to continue regardless of the weather conditions-- (i.e. using technology to read, complete and submit assignments; using already existing learning systems like Lexia and Study Island to complete homework assignments; and using paper packets for students who do not have internet access).  Please complete the following survey to provide our district with feedback on formulating such a plan.

Infinite Campus Move

KDE and Infinite Campus have recently decided to move all of the district's Infinite Campus servers from Frankfort to the Infinite Campus data center.

This means two things for staff, students, and parents:

First, Infinite Campus will be unavailable from 12/23/16 until 12/30/16.

Second, once the move is complete the address for the site will change for both the application page as well as the parent portal.

This will mean that bookmarks and icons pointing to the current address will not work after the switch over. You will want to delete these to prevent confusion after we return from winter break.

We will update the district page during that week so the link on the webpage will work.

The new addresses will be:

https://kyede4.infinitecampus.org/campus/garrard.jsp  - PRODUCTION APPLICATION URL

https://kyede4.infinitecampus.org/campus/portal/garrard.jsp - PARENT PORTAL APPLICATION URL

This will not affect the mobile app.
