2018 Rogers Scholar * Kennedy Bruner

1

Congratulations to Kennedy Bruner for being selected for Rogers Scholars 2018.  The Center for Rural Development’s flagship youth program—provides leadership and college scholarship opportunities to help rising high school juniors in Southern and Eastern Kentucky develop the skills they need to seize their potential as the region’s next generation of business and entrepreneurial leaders. During this intensive week-long program, Rogers Scholars work on building their leadership skills, participating in a series of team-building exercises; receive hands-on instructional training from professional experts in engineering, healthcare, and video production; and interact with nationally recognized business leaders and entrepreneurs.

The committee shall consist of one district principal; one district office administrator other than the superintendent; one local Board member; two parents of students; one district elementary teacher; one district middle or high teacher; two district classified employees; and two community members. The committee will review calendar drafts, consider suggestions received on the survey, and make an effort to implement recommendations from school principals in developing a school calendar that reflects what is in the best interest of students. The committee will determine what is most appropriate in placing the four [4] professional development days, opening day, closing day, make-up days, four [4] holidays, and other days the district must be closed such as election days. The Board of Education has the final decision-making power in establishing the school calendar.

If you would like to make suggestions for the calendar committee to consider, please complete the following survey.

Garrard County Schools will be closed on Friday, April 13, 2018

Garrard County Schools will be closed on Friday, April 13, 2018 as many of our staff members will travel to Frankfort to advocate for our children and for public education.  The House and Senate will be in session and are expected to consider whether or not to override vetoes issued by Governor Bevin.  There are three key bills that are critical to public education.

Two of those are the budget and revenue bills for the upcoming biennium (HB 200 and HB 366).  These bills allocate the state’s resources and set revenue structures to fund them.  The Governor’s initial budget proposal included drastic cuts to education.  Specifically, for Garrard County Schools, the cuts and increased costs would amount to an $850,000 loss.  The Senate’s proposed budget was slightly better and the House version was by far the friendliest to public education.  The budget compromise reached by the House and Senate could still be a small net loss for Garrard County Schools but is far better than the Governor’s proposal.  The Governor vetoed the compromise reached by the House and Senate.  We will urge the House and Senate to override that veto and the veto of the accompanying revenue bill.  If no budget is passed, it is uncertain what would occur during a potential special session.
