Kentucky Bluegrass Award
CDR is offering an optional “Reading Challenge” again this year to those students in grades 3-5 that would like to participate. The goal is to challenge your student in the area of reading and introduce our students to a variety of quality literature. In order to complete the reading challenge, your student is to read the ten selected books nominated for the Kentucky Bluegrass Award and pass a quiz to show that they have read the books in their entirety. Students that do not read all ten books but do read some will be eligible for the larger prize on the books they did read.
The purpose of the KBA is to encourage students in Kentucky to read a variety of quality literature suitable for their age and reading abilities. The KBA committee selects ten books each year, which have been published in the last 3 years, for grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. An award is given each year in each of these areas and voted on by Kentucky students.
Your student will need to read and take quizzes on the ten titles listed on the back of this paper by Friday, March 31, 2017. A limited number of these books are available for checkout in the CDR library or you may want to search for them on your own.
Once a student reads a book, they will take the quiz in the CDR library. When they pass the quiz, they will receive a prize from the treasure box and a ticket to submit for the larger prize of that book title. Each book title will have their own prize drawing for a larger prize. All students that participate will also have the opportunity to vote for the KBA winner.
Students that participate in the Reading Challenge, will be invited to this year’s KBA Celebration which will take place during the school day. Their name will also be placed in the drawing for the Grand Prize based on the number of books they have read. Please encourage your child to participate in this year’s CDR Reading Challenge!
