Garrard County High School held its 2026 commencement ceremony on May 22, honoring graduating seniors during a formal program that featured student speakers, district leadership remarks, and the presentation of diplomas.

The ceremony began with a welcome address from JROTC Cadet Sergeant Major Billy Godber. Superintendent Dr. Kevin Stull then recognized the Class of 2026 Valedictorian and Salutatorian before introducing Student Council President Abigail Travis as the evening’s student speaker.

Valedictorian – Colin Gilbert

Garrard County High School Valedictorian Colin Gilbert graduates summa cum laude with a 4.411 weighted GPA. A National Merit Commended Scholar, Colin distinguished himself through achievements in academics, leadership, music, service, and extracurricular involvement.

Throughout high school, Colin participated in Jazz Band, Concert Band, and Marching Band, earning honors in both the Bluegrass All-Region Band and the Kentucky All-State Band. He was also active in National Honor Society, Academic Team, Student Council, National Beta Club, Kentucky Youth Assembly, Swim Team, Robotics, and the Gifted and Talented Program, where he served as a youth leader mentoring elementary students.

Through Beta Club, Colin competed in state convention academic testing and robotics events, and at the Kentucky Youth Assembly he served as a bill sponsor during the statewide conference. In addition, he earned certification in AutoCAD and achieved the rank of Life Scout in Scouting America, where he is currently working toward Eagle Scout.

This fall, Colin will attend Morehead State University to pursue a degree in Space Systems Engineering.

Gilbert

Salutatorian – Trace Scott

Salutatorian Trace Scott graduates as a member of the Class of 2026 with strong interests in engineering, technology, and hands-on design work.

During high school, Trace focused on creative and technical projects centered on automotive fabrication and mechanical problem-solving, building a strong foundation for a future in engineering. He plans to continue pursuing his long-term goal of attending the United States Military Academy while beginning prerequisite coursework at Bluegrass Community and Technical College. His alternate academic pathway includes transferring to the University of Kentucky to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Trace expressed appreciation for the support of his family, friends, and teachers throughout his academic journey. He also shared advice for future graduates inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s “Everybody’s Free”:

“Don’t waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind. The race is long and, in the end, it’s only with yourself.”

Following her remarks, Abigail Travis presented Dr. Stull with an honorary diploma in recognition of his career in education and his service to Garrard County Schools.

The honor recognized Dr. Stull’s 39 years in education, including 27 years within the district, and highlighted his contributions to academic growth, expanded student opportunities, the development of new athletic facilities at Garrard County High School, and efforts to strengthen unity across the district.

Principal Michael Anderson later recognized the staff and support systems that contributed to the success of the graduating class before the presentation of diplomas.

Diplomas were presented by members of the Garrard County Board of Education alongside Assistant Principals Mark Scenters and Elizabeth Turner. Members of the Board of Education include Chair Dr. Jerry Browning, Mary A. Davis, Kenneth Hurt, Dr. Connie Lamb, and Ethan Smith.
