On Monday, July 27, 2026, Garrard County Schools proudly hosted its second annual Hall of Fame Banquet, celebrating five distinguished individuals whose achievements and lifelong service have brought honor to their community, professions, and alma mater. The evening continued a growing tradition of recognizing alumni and educators whose accomplishments inspire future generations and exemplify the values of Garrard County Schools.
Held in a spirit of celebration and gratitude, the evening began with a welcome from Superintendent Dr. Kalem Grasham, followed by musical performances from Jackson Arnold and William Arnold. Dr. Eve Proffitt, Co-President of the Friends of Garrard County Schools Foundation, shared remarks about the Foundation before Dr. Jerry Browning, Chairman of the Board of Education, offered the blessing. Guests then enjoyed a delicious dinner prepared and served by Keys and Crows.
Each Hall of Fame inductee was introduced by a person of their choosing before reflecting on their personal journey, their connection to Garrard County, and the significance of receiving this honor. As part of the ceremony, each inductee received a custom glass award and the signature Garrard County Schools Hall of Fame jacket in recognition of their impact.
2026 Hall of Fame Inductees:
• Ben Arnold, presented by Ms. Mary Davis
An internationally recognized music scholar, author, pianist, and educator, Arnold currently serves as Director of the University of Kentucky School of Music. His distinguished career in music research, performance, and higher education leadership has earned international recognition, particularly for his scholarship on composer Franz Liszt and the relationship between music and war.
• Brigadier General Ronnie S. Barnes, presented by Dr. Kalem Grasham
A highly decorated military leader, Brigadier General Barnes has served more than three decades in the Kentucky Army National Guard and the United States military. As Comptroller for the National Guard Bureau, he oversees a $35 billion budget while continuing a career marked by exceptional leadership and numerous military honors, including the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star Medal.
• Ken Hurt, presented by Dr. Kevin Stull
Known throughout Kentucky for his extraordinary contributions to athletics and education, Hurt has dedicated more than 60 years to coaching, teaching, school leadership, and public service. A member of both the 12th Region Boys and Girls Basketball Halls of Fame, his influence has shaped generations of student-athletes while helping build Garrard County's proud athletic tradition.
• Danny Irvin, presented by Mr. Cliff Ed Irvin
A respected real estate professional, auctioneer, philanthropist, and community leader, Irvin's career has spanned nearly six decades. His leadership within the auction profession, combined with his dedication to charitable causes and community service, has earned him induction into the Kentucky Auctioneer Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Auctioneers Association Lifetime Achievement Award.
• Tommie Mae Francis Merritt, presented by Mr. Cabal Merritt and Mr. Paul McPherson
For more than five decades, Merritt devoted her life to educating and inspiring students throughout Garrard County. From her years at Mason School to her service at Garrard County High School, her unwavering commitment to academic excellence and student success created a legacy that continues to influence educators and young people today.
The evening concluded with closing remarks from Superintendent Dr. Kalem Grasham, who expressed appreciation to the inductees, their families, and everyone who helped make the event possible. He reflected on the importance of preserving Garrard County Schools' rich history while honoring those whose accomplishments continue to inspire excellence throughout the district.
The Hall of Fame Banquet once again showcased the individuals whose leadership, service, and achievements have left a mark on Garrard County and beyond.
