Congratulations to Lizeth Gallegos, GCHS Sophomore, for being selected to represent Garrard County High School at the 2023 Youth Leadership Summit in San Francisco, CA! The Youth Leadership Summit provides GEAR UP students with opportunities to maximize their leadership skills, create a national network of peers and obtain training that will help them make a positive change in their community and around the world. This is the second year in a row a student has been selected from Garrard County! Lizzy was surprised this morning by her family, GCHS Administration, and GEAR UP with the announcement! GEAR UP Students visited Morehead State University on Thursday March 23rd. Before their campus tour, students attended an admissions presentation where they took a deeper look into the University’s Nursing and Agricultural programs. They heard from ROTC students in those programs and the benefits that Morehead’s Army ROTC has to offer. Students also learned about admission requirements, merit scholarships and work study programs.

Garrard County FCCLA placed 2nd in the state Parliamentary Procedure STAR events. These students will travel to Denver, CO this summer to compete at Nationals. Congratulations to Lizzy Gallegos, Kayma Galloway, Audrey Jennings, and Piper McGuffey.

Students in Mrs. Fielder's Honors Integrated Science class have been studying connections between Earth's systems, particularly carbon dioxide found in the atmosphere and oceans. In this lab, they were modeling the formation of calcium carbonate by adding carbon dioxide to a calcium hydroxide solution. Students also tested the acidity and pH of their solutions.

Don't forget about this week's event! Garrard County Schools' Youth Service Center is hosting a Steered Straight event, "Vaping Me Crazy," on March 23rd, 2023 at Garrard Middle School. This will be a free seminar for parents and students on vaping and drug education. Dinner will be provided at 5:00PM (first come, first serve), and the presentation will begin at 6:00PM. We hope to see you there!

Garrard County High School GEAR UP students visited the University of Kentucky where they learned about admissions, housing and campus life. Students took part in a walking tour of the campus and finished up their afternoon by having lunch at The 90, an on campus dining hall.

Ian Alcorn finished 4th Place in the Financial Literacy competition and will be advancing to the state competition! Caroline Ballard finished 4th in the Employability Skills competition and will be advancing to the state! Emily Boyd, Alex Caudill and Brandon Swinney placed 1st in the Business Plan competition and will advancing to the state competition! Garrard County High School is proud to be a recipient of College Board's Female Diversity Award for AP Computer Science Principles. Research shows that female students who take AP CSP in high school are more than five times as likely to major in computer science in college. This is the third year that GCHS has offered AP CSP and this class is taught by Joanna Stevens. Congratulations to the GCHS Odyssey of the Mind Team for winning their East Central Regional Tournament division yesterday at Corbin High School. Abigail Travis, Abagail Bailey, Milli Crace, Eliza Fuller, Natalie Clark, and Zoe Tuggle will compete at the state competition in March at Boyle County High School. The Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving program that encourages students to think outside of the box. Students were scored on their "Dramedy" and Spontaneous Categories. This group of students is part of the Gifted and Talented Program under the direction of Tisha Weaver.
